Welcome

The ‘muse’ is back!

It’s been almost a year – 10 months to be precise – when I last wrote anything in my crime fiction “Behind the Mic” mystery series. I’d been plugging along on “Bleeder,” book #3, but with the pandemic worsening in May and June, I just did not feel like writing about murder, domestic violence and other typical mystery subjects.

So I made masks galore, along with many of my other sewing and fiber friends, and punted on writing for awhile. I lost count after about 600 masks, for friends, family, companies, the Navajo Nation, the Phoenix Indian Medical Center, a local orthopedic office and more.

Then because I needed something more positive to work on, AZ Creates! was conceived, and along with my partner-in-art Cathy Beard and editor son Devon Hancock, we are now is season two of the YouTube web series to highlight creatives in Arizona. It’s been a great ride, interviewing such fabulous guests like choreographer Pam Cannedy, filmmaker Patrick Ball, painter Nancy Breiman, metal sculptor Kevin Caron, and authors such as Lynne Hartke, John J. Rust, Margaret Ann Spence, Timothy Moore, and many more. We are nearing the end of our second season of 16 guests, and chances are this will be the conclusion, at least for a while.

Because I’m writing again! Turns out I only have about five chapters left in book #3, and I have been spending time at the computer finishing up the manuscript, which feels really good. I have both my vaccines, and colors now seem a little brighter. I feel a lot more positive about the future, which includes finishing “Bleeder” and also diving back into “Raw Image,” the first in a new “Behind the Lens” series about a hardworking, tough television photojournalist who also intends to expose sex traffickers. I also have a new mystery theatre podcast in mind, so be watching for details about that.

About my books

Bleeder, the third book in the “Behind the Mic Mysteries,” is the continuing saga of intrepid radio reporter, Lisa Powers, who covers the trial of the cop shooter from the Dead Air book. The story will be a fictionalized version of an actual case I covered during my television crime reporting days and will be “moved on a change of venue” to Prescott. I will include details about the lovely mountain town that was my second home for five years. Lisa will also cover a domestic violence case, and the podcast is tentatively entitled “Art of the Steal,” about a crime in an art gallery.

I have have two audio books for “Fade Out” and “Dead Air,” both available on Audible and Amazon. My son, audio production engineer Devon J. Hancock, handled all the editing and mastering duties, as well as adding sound effects and original music (www.DevonJHancock.com)

If you like crime fiction mysteries, check out the novella “Deadly Misfire,” by Short on Time Books (www.ShortOnTimeBooks.com), which is available on Amazon. It’s the story of a mysterious man who stalks reporter Lisa Powers at a radio convention, and every day ramps up threats against her. She and her co-worker/boyfriend Dean Jeffries fear for her life as tensions build on the final night with an awards presentation for which Lisa is in the running with another reporter from New York, who coincidentally looks similar to Lisa. Info: https://tinyurl.com/BuyDeadlyMisfire.

“Dead Air, book #2 in the “Behind the Mic Mysteries,” is now available in both e-book and print on Amazon at https://tinyurl.com/BuyDeadAir. In addition, the audio book for Fade Out is is also online at Amazon and Audible.

The cold case Lisa works on is a 15-year-old sexual assault of a 4-year-old girl, who is now 19. The young victim has not had any closure all this time, and Lisa is determined to help her find the rapist.

Lisa’s “podcast,” which she writes for fun at night after covering gritty crime stories during the day, is a “film noir” style story of a 1940s private eye and a dame. Only L. N. Pane, P.I. is the dame and the gentleman seeks help finding out why someone is out to kill him.

There are other stories Lisa covers in “Dead Air,” and as well as a new potential love interest for our heroine.

You can hear an interview with me on Golden State Media Concepts, about my books, my background and many other subjects, including my latest novella called “Deadly Misfire,” one of seven stories in a multi-author series called “Tawnee Mountain Mysteries.” Check out the podcast and blog cast at https://t.co/9WfsjTFBYw

Music full, cue SFX

It finally happened! For whatever reason, I’ve always been interested in sound effects. I listen intently at the “foley effects” in motion pictures, always wondering how they create the footsteps on gravel, or horse hooves [...]

Thankfuls

A friend recently gave me a book called “40 Days of Thankful Living,” where there are spaces to write what I’m grateful for between Oct. 16 and Nov. 24, or the 40 days prior to [...]

How hot is it?

How many ways can you say hot? In Arizona, many pass the time coming up with new descriptions for what temperatures feel like when they climb over 100 degrees in the Sonoran Desert. Scorching, blistering [...]

Writing time: stick to schedule

Many people ask how I accomplish all that I do. The simple, and practical answer, is "schedule, schedule, schedule." I’ve mostly been sticking to my Monday through Friday morning writing routine, which sometimes includes reading the [...]
